Scientology is a religion. It is recognized as such both in Canada and the United States of America, and gives its proponents the same rights as those who follow other more mainstream religions, such as Christianity. In fact, Scientology is the fastest growing religion in the world, at the rate of three new churches a day as of 2005. Every religion at one time or another has been considered a cult by those who didn't understand or more boldly, by those who were ignorant of the belief system; even beloved Christianity was once considered "The Cult of Christ" by the Romans, Egyptians, etc., who believed in more than one deity, and who did not accept the Christian's belief that there was only one God. There was much persecution of the Christians for years, and once it became the accepted path, those with other beliefs were persecuted in turn.

We live in what is supposed to be a more enlightened time, with freedom of religion, and yet it would seem the intolerances still exist. So, I offer you this bit of advice. If you truly want to evaluate Scientology, or any other belief system fairly, pick up every bit of literature you can find on the subject, and read. And please do not use the internet as your sole source of information. The information highway is fraught with misinformation. Try going to the library, yes the library, and read until your eyes pop out of your head. Don't suppose because of the bizarre antics of some very public figures such as Tom Cruise, that their beliefs are any less valid than your own. Spirituality, whatever path you choose to take, is a very personal journey.

Scientology is based on the premise that you are not simply a body with a mind, but an immortal spiritual being. At its core is the need to build strong interpersonal relationships, lasting marriages, and raise intelligent, capable, and emotionally stable children. Scientology is something that you do, not a series of beliefs that you are asked to accept without question.

I couldn't possibly tell you everything there is to know about Scientology, my best advice is, if you are interested in the subject head to your local public library or book store and pick up some books on the subject.
