Off the top of my head, things you should probably do:
1)Educate yourself - no one is going to want to elect an uneductated leader, or a leader without some experience.
2)Make contacts - you're going to need money for your campaigning, and friends. You'll need to build a treasure chest to pay for your advertising to get your name out there, and for the people you hire to call people for you and campaign for you. This is also where friends come in, you'll need "friends" to work to in your campaign and to plug your name when talking about the voting.
3)Get media attention - get in good with the media, you're going to need some air time, try to get interviews and try to get in close with them so they continue to give you positive publicity.
4)Make political moves - do positive things that will get you attention and recognition as a good person in the public eye. Go volunteer to help feed poor people or make large publicly known donations. Don't bring it up, but have others bring it up.
5)Make your platform known - people want to know where you stand on the issues. Sure, some politicians can get around this by being very charismatic (Schwarzenegger), but most need to make their foundation known. Pick something that isn't too controversial to champion, like education.
6)Empower your base - Make the people who are on your side really excited to support you. They will get your name out there, might help campaign for you, and will vote for you.
7) Moderate yourself - Don't be too extreme, after you've empowered your base, moderate your views to catch the common public.
