Manchester are the most successful English club in the history of football. They have won more tournaments and league trophies than any other club, even surpassing the massive Liverpool success of the 70s. And even the few seasons in the last few years where they have not won anything they have been very nearly there. While they haven't gotten any worse, there are a couple of teams that have gotten a lot better, which is where Manchester United are struggling to remain on top.
The fan base certainly still believes in the potential of Manchester United to stay the best team in the premiership. They have by far and away the largest following of any football team worldwide. In fact it is estimated that they have over 330 million fans worldwide, which is equal to around %5 of the worlds population.
This is down to not only their success but the fact that they have capitalized on this success to take their image to other parts of the world. If you were to ask a child in Japan or Africa who their favorite soccer club is, more often then not they will say Manchester United. This has helped them to remain the richest club in the world, irrespective of how well they are playing.

But these were soon negated when he signed a new contract which will see him through for the next few seasons as least.
It is through Ferguson's management skills that Manchester have become the club that they have. He is not only the longest serving manager in the premiership, but the most successful as well. Also having won countless awards for his management skills over the years. It seems than that Manchester United will always be a very good team with him at the helm, and he is staying at the helm until at least 2010, and perhaps beyond.
As good as the manager of a team can be there are always other clubs who will in some aspect of their game be better than any others. Chelsea for example now have pretty much limitless finances to procure new players, better facilities and to generally keep themselves as one of the best teams in the world.
Similarly Arsenal have been improving a lot over the last few seasons. With a good mixture of home grown talent and young foreign stars being bought to develop, Arsene Wenger looks set to only get better still. There was a time when Manchester United were the best
