Novel excerpts: Science fiction

Gail heard a chime and suddenly became alert. A light lit up on the panel in front of her. She pressed a button under the light and looked at one of the monitor. She saw what looked like a man snooping around a building. She called out, "Sis, looks like we have someone prowling around the barn again!"

Debbie came in from the next room. She "looked" at the monitor. She was wearing what looked like dark glasses over her blind eyes. In actuality they were tiny high density digital cameras. These devices fed a signal to a bioelectric mesh array cultured into the skin of her back. The signal stimulated the especially cultured nerves cells. She had learned to interpret this stimulation as shape and color. The mesh consisted of two sections. One received its data from her left camera while the other received its data from the right camera. This gave her a sort of depth perception. The cameras were imbedded in quartz, thus able to function in either NShalain or Oshalain space.

She studied the display for a moment then hit another switch on the panel. The data was directly sent to her mesh. She said, "I wish people would stop trying to get into that barn. We keep telling them to stay away."

Gail nodded. She watched the man on the monitor. As the man moved, the view automatically changed as the various cameras came into play, keeping him in view. He appeared to be trying to find a way into the secure building.

The man moved very close to one of the hidden cameras. Gail used the device to focus on his eyes and managed to get a decent retinal scan. She keyed a search on the data into the main ranglier and turned her attention back to the man.

"He seems to be rather determined to get in," commented Debbie.

"That he does," said her sister. "You know, he is rather cute!"

"Gail!" exclaimed Debbie.

"Well, you know as well as I do, that my prospects here are almost nil," said her sister. "All the men are either married, or are too young." She continued in a rueful tone, "Or, they are afraid of me because of my half-Oshalain nature. Others are unfortunately too closely related to me to be considered. Shillar is a real gem, but he is my nephew!"

A file opened up on the ranglier screen. Gail looked at it and said, "His name is Peter Walsh." She continued reading.

Debbie pressed a button on the keyboard and the file that her sister was reading flowed into her mesh. After a moment she said, "Very impressive background!"

"True," replied
