The power of the written word, driven by an ink filled sword, can pierce the very marrow of the bones, oh, what a force to be reckoned with. Much like an artist paints a landscape stretched across four corners of a blank canvas, sundry hues and strokes being the venue by which a tale of beauty or chaos unfolds before curious eyes, so it is, when a seasoned word-smith has strewn a string of characters onto empty pages, creating a wave of emotions, all with varying depths, as the reader embraces line upon line, taking in every jot and tittle. When thinking of unity, my initial thought doesn't necessarily take me in the direction of harmony amongst humankind or agreement between two or more. Instead, I think of unity, as in creating a bond between the author and the reader.
A composer, with pen in hand has the ability to draw you into uncharted waters or anchor your imagination to dusty shores. The magic of the pen can unwittingly cause a giggle to escape your lips in the quiet of your room, or send a tear streaming down flushed cheeks. Take you on a journey through the whimsical or an adventure to the mystical. A fountain pen has the power to spring forth life or plunge your soul into the depths of despair when under the guidance of a well versed pusher. With quill in hand, mankind has been known to take an adamant stand against anything and everything, or compel the masses to yield to popular demand.
The pen's end result almost always causes the reader to delve into the secret chambers of their mind, uncovering long buried treasures, the contents often revealing joy and yes, many times sadness. As a pen lays empty while void of ink, so is a writer without an audience, mere words abiding alone. Pen set to paper in proper form will no doubt invite the reader to become one with their vision, allowing them to embrace an otherwise flighty dream or release pent up emotions. The pen is prisoner to the mind of the master at work, creating a unified atmosphere - or not glimpsing up from pages into the eyes of the beholder, often times enrapturing the reader's very soul. Two strangers become one between the pages of a book lined with ink induced sentiments.
As ink cannot separate itself from the pen, writers cannot separate themselves from their audience. Together, they become one, unified, even if only for a brief moment in time.
