Octopush: The unknown sport of underwater hockey

Underwater hockey may just be another form of water polo but with different sticks. It might sound a bit ridiculous but, new age fad sports can't be considered normal by any means. I think to understand the Octopush or underwater hockey you have to know what to expect.

1.) The sport is played by two separate teams at the bottom of a full size pool. The main objective is to push a heavy object (lead puck) from one end to the other using a hockey stick of all things!

2.) The puck must than pass through the opposing teams goal or net.

3.) According to the moderator I was told each team must consist of 6 players however a full team can have 10 able bodies, but only six can be in play during a match.

4.) The net is made of metal so it remains submerged as well as the puck which can't exceed 2 kilograms.

5.) There is a time coach and a chief referee who enforces the rules of play, which are way too many for me to be able to submit just a short reflection of what underwater hockey is.

There is equal benefit to underwater sports since the cardio workout is well reccomended. I think a great deal of effort must be taken to perform underwater.

Many doctors agree that swimming is an excellent past-time. The problem is that normal swimming can be terminally boring. Underwater hockey, however, does keeps your mind alert - and there is barely any negative impact to staying fit! Many tall people find that underwater sport is the best way of avoiding back problems, so there is a great deal of health benefit.

Sure sounds like hockey but the real issue is the large assortment of equipment required. Snorkels, knee pads, a mask, flippers, which are actually called hockey fins. The whole sport is very methodical, but only extremist actually are avid underwater hockey enthusiasts.

I watched a match one day at a local pool, and was very amused to see such underwater antics. Players bob and dive long enough to suck a deep breath, before sinking back down to try to score on the opposing team. I can say that a great deal of detail must go into preparation, although the sport doesn't seem to require a whole lot of skill, other than holding your breath for long periods of time. I guess each person has their own opinion to a topic, and personally I think hockey should remain on the ice or streets, and definitely not at the bottom of a pool!
