Solutions to homeschooling socialization issues

my daughter spent a day in public high school with a friend to "see what she was missing" and remarked that no one wants to make eye contact. "It's as if they all wish they could be invisible, even the teachers." Children are supposed to learn by imitating the adults they observe every day while they go about the tasks of life. By working alongside the family in the garden, the kitchen, the shop, and the office, a child can develop skills rather than learn how to hate "school." Homeschoolers often develop their own home businesses by the time they are teenagers and develop social skills through service occupations and/or ministries. Volunteering in the church nursery with toddlers, visiting the elderly and shut-ins, or working to distribute food to the needy are all easy ways to become a part of the community.

Elwood P. Down in the play, "Harvey" states, "In this life you can be either oh-so-smart or oh-so-pleasant. I've been smart, I recommend pleasant." When public institutions urge socialization they are talking about exposing children to large numbers of their peers so they can be smart about competition, cliques, and scholastic ranking. But learning to be "pleasant" company is something that takes time and mature guidance and homeschoolers have a tremendous head start.
