Crossing over the Judge Jolly bridge that connects Marco Island to the real world can be compared to that anticipated rush on a roller coaster, you just don't know what to expect once you get there. You may even need to cross over the bridge a second time to truly enjoy the sprawling vistas of turquoise waters slapping up against islets of mangrove trees. Look hard because it's likely there will be a dolphin or manatee splashing around in the waves below . You have arrived to Marco Island, Florida, the northernmost island of the Ten Thousand Islands, hugging the coast of Southwest Florida. With a swelling population of 30,000 inhabitants in the winter months, it is fair to say that this 17 square mile island is a popular destination. Interestingly, more than one third (or 6.5 square miles) of Marco Island actually lies beneath the water. So guess what activities are in abundance in this tropical playground? Yep, you guessed it.
Water. It's what attracts most visitors and residents to vacation or live here. With its 4 mile stretch of white sandy beaches and world renowned boating, landlubbers beware! One of the few activities for you is to hike over to Indian Hill on the south end. Here you will officially be at the highest elevation in Southwest Florida, a whopping 58 feet above sea level, with some surprisingly impressive views of Marco Island below you. Back down at sea level, almost every activity worth experiencing in and around Marco Island involves a bathing suit, towel and sunscreen if you're smart.
Assuming you have settled into your hotel or condo (and hoping you are lucky enough to enjoy some panoramic beach views), go walk the beach. Towards the north end, you'll find Tigertail Beach, the most popular simply because it is the most accessible for everyone to enjoy. With 31 acres of land to enjoy, Tigertail boasts terrific amenities including restrooms, concessions, playgrounds and even a volleyball court. This is also one of the most valuable bird sanctuaries in all of Florida. Here you will find pelicans, herons, ibis, terns, plovers and the beloved Bald Eagle. Don't forget your binoculars as there is constant activity amongst our feathered friends. Unless you are a resident with a beach pass or lucky enough to be staying at a beachfront resort, the only other public beach worth mentioning here is Residents Beach South. It is located just north of Cape Marco and while it offers wide water views and powder white sand, in has no amenities.
