I totally disagree with this.
Kissing up to a boss is see through. If you know you are doing it, so does your boss. I know this because I am a boss.
I'll admit to enjoying the kissing up my employees attempt. On some occasions I actually revel in it. But I'll also say it has never gotten an employee anything but a sincere 'Thank You '. The compliments make me smile when I may be a tad too stressed. The extra workload some will take on in their brown nose attempts are helpful and make my days run smoother.
But that is it.
This boss likes a challenge. I want to know what can make my business better and more efficient. I want disagreement because this is what WILL make my business more diverse and competitive. You get those insights from employees who work hard because they want to, or have to. Not from the ones who follow me to my car and go on and on about the idea I had last week being fantastic. Those see through individuals who say how much they 'Love' their jobs and this company, yet will back stab you in a heart beat.
I want to hear from the employee working at his or her desk who isn't afraid to speak their mind. The employee who believes he or she can improve on an idea. Or better yet, have ideas of their own. Kissing up to a boss is showing your boss you do not have the self confidence to make it on your own individualism.
Of course there are days when I am moody. On those days your brown nose ways may get you a raise, however it will not put you in the corner office.
Kissing up may also entice gossip and animosity from fellow workers. . Of course we all know gossip is the fuel of every business. However too much negativity within the workforce can be lethal to a company. When employees begin to work against each other, this causes a bad and uncomfortable work atmosphere. Animosity can interfere with the productive flow of business . And not for nothing, whether I am an employee or a boss, I hate working in an uncomfortable work zone. Most people work 8-10 hours a day, five to six days a week and don't need the aggravation.
Atmosphere while working is everything. Content people are productive. Insecure workers are just that.
I recently terminated my brown nose. As I said earlier in the article, people who kiss up to get ahead, are generally nothing more than a backstabber. They inform you on a daily basis what a good boss you are. They say how they love their jobs, then boom, The two-faced side shines through. It always does. In that case ,everyone loses.
Unfortunately for me, my best worker was guilty of kissing up. Or perhaps I was guilty for allowing it. She caused more gossip, more animosity than any company could tolerate. In the end, true character comes through. Just as quick as she could flatter , she could cut you and your company to pieces.
Sadly, an important fact she didn't know about herself was, she possessed the skills needed to be a boss in the corner office. This young woman had abilities to rise through the ranks faster than any member of my staff without kissing up. Yet allowed her absorption to kiss her chances goodbye.
In the morning , on my way to work, as I drive by the unemployment office. I see her go inside. I feel bad because she was good at her job. I feel good because what she was doing was bad.
