It is concerning that the WWE is once again in the spotlight for the abuse of drugs. Unlike the rest of the athletic field of the world, it's classed as entertainment but what people fail to realize that even though it is scripted (i.e. the wrestlers know the outcome of the match beforehand)it is a very physical job. It is like Jean-Paul Levesque (stage name Triple H) said that it's telling a physical story - it's theater with a lot of physical attributes. If anyone watched the short lived MTV tv reality contest: Tough Enough, they showed the physical, mental, and emotional stress that even amateur wrestlers go through. They are in pain from practicing so imagine how much pain they'd be in during a match. Mick Foley and Steve Austin are good examples of what happens to wrestlers when you've done it for such a long time. Mick Foley can hardly wrestle anymore due to his multiple surgeries that he's had to do. One of the most memorable moments was when he was in the Elimination chamber with The Undertaker and ended up on the top of the cage but was thrown off by the Undertaker, going into the table below. He was being carted away by the paramedics but he got back up to finish the match. Imagine the pain that he must of been feeling after that stunt! Steve Austin's knees are both messed up due to his wrestling. Hulk Hogan has a spinal injury (he has to get shots directly into his spinal cord to alleviate pain).
If you haven't noticed, there haven't been any "out of the ring" stunts happening as much such as fighting behind the stage, people using car doors, garbage tops, and so forth to hurt their opponent. Why? Because it's agonizing pain.
It is unfortunate that some athletes abuse prescription drugs and steroids in order to try and maintain their physique and to take the edge off of their physical pain. Unlike martial artists, they don't get calcium buildups in their joints and in fact, their cartilage and what have you, rub away, making it worse to move around. Why? Because they're fighting in a different style.
As far as the incident with Chris Benoit, his death as well as his families has nothing to do with his profession as a wrestler. He could of been an American football player or a hockey player and so forth, still would of made the news and shone a bad light upon whatever sports affiliation association that they're with. What people failed to say was that a CT scan was done of Chris Benoit's brain and it showed that he had a comprehension capacity
