An introduction to blogging

In case you feel like you are the only person left in the world who does not have a blog, or if you are unsure what blogging means exactly, this article is for you. A blog is a website where a person posts messages on certain topics. The writing and posting of the messages is referred to as blogging or to blog. There are blogs that consist of commentary on news stories or blogs on specific topics. You can think of blogs about politics, media blogs, sports blogs, fashion blogs, business blogs, and so forth. Then there are also blogs that are more personal.

Personal blogs usually do not have a specific topic, and consist of stories about the blogger's personal life, pretty much like an online diary. This type of personal blog seems to be especially popular. Starting a blog is very easy, and anyone who wants to can start a blog. These days there are many websites around where you can register and create a blog without any difficulty at all. Some examples of popular blogging sites include Blogger and Livejournal.

Everyone these days appears to feel the need to share their private live with the world. That is another important characteristic of a blog; unless you make specific restrictions anyone who wants to can read your blog, and they often have the opportunity to comment on your blog as well. The positive side to this is of course that contrary to a private journal, an online journal can be much more interactive. You can share your personal experiences and thoughts with the world, and "the world" in turn can let you know what they think of your experiences and thoughts. If you want to share your private life with the world, there is probably no better way to do it than via the internet.

Last year there were around 112 million blogs to be found on the internet, according to Technorati, a blog search engine that tracks blogs from all over the world. With that many blogs on the internet, not every blog can be read by millions, and many bloggers might have to accept that their blog is not very popular. For most bloggers though, this does not seem to be much of a problem, because they seem to mainly be blogging for fun. However, incase you have a more professional blog, or you intend for your blog to be very popular, you might have to work very hard to make this happen.

One option to make your blog more popular is to advertise your site on special websites that make you visit websites and they in return give you visitors for your site. Other options are to get your blog on so-called blogrolls, have others put a link to your blog on their blog, or make sure your blog is easily found by search engines. The best advertisement for your blog though is quality and word of mouth. If your blog is good and interesting enough people will find it.
