I find it funny that such a belief must be labeled. Atheist. The beliefs of an athiest are not a belief, it's just a way of being. Most 'atheist' people that I know did not even hear the term 'atheist' until they were an adult! And by that point they just shook their heads and laughed at the irony that they do in fact, have a religious title. Who'da thunk it?
I was raised Christian. While I find that the basic morals and values are fine, they are just that. Basic morals and values. I don't need to think that I should not lie, cheat, steal etc because they are '10 Commandments from God'. I don't want to do those things, because I don't want to hurt my loved ones or other people in the community. It makes no difference what religion you chooses(or doesn't), you either have morals and values or you don't. That's it!
The history of the world has shown that religion causes a lot of blood and death. Misery and screaming. But that's beside the point. I would rather see people running in the grass, playing guitars and laughing, enjoying the days that we have here. Not fighting for religion. The stories that I heard of Noah's Ark and so on, are no more believable to me than hearing that fairies live in my garden and give me money for my tooth. They are just stories to make life easier for children. After all, why would they want to lose a tooth if there were no tooth fairy? It's something to be excited about if the tooth fairy is going to come and bring a coin for the tooth. And so on. Seriously, how would one boat house every species in the world? You mean to tell me that these animals all peacefully co-existed for 40 days? Please.
What I like the most about 'atheism' is that every day of my life, I realize that I only have so much time before non-existence. And I'm OK with that. Before I was born, I was not hurting because I didn't exist, and I will not hurt after my death either. I find it very comforting, and I feel much more free to do the things that I long to do, see the people I enjoy, etc. I love it! It's freeing. Life is more enjoyable not worrying about 'judgment day' muah hahahaha. As a child, I used to fear death. The prayer I said nightly was morbid and scary. "As I lay me down to sleep - I pray the lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake - I pray the lord my soul to take, Amen." AAHHHH! What a horrible thing for a child to think about night after night lying in bed. Even now, I have a strange fascination with death, but it has changed. It is not fear anymore. I know now that I will not be judged by some random 'spirit' and condemned to an eternity of suffering because I 'sinned'. Anyways, enough of Christianity. Like I said before, this is the religion that I know about.
I feel that religious people (some that I've known anyways) spend entirely too much time worrying about what's going to happen to them after death. For chrissake, your time might be up in 2 days and you're worried about that!? What a waste of life! There's so much to see and do in this world, so much culture, music and art, so many fabulous and fun experiences to be had. Worrying about death is pointless, and that's one of the things that I love most about atheism. Knowing that you don't get to live forever, and that you better make the best of what you have, now, today. No eternity - now.
