Wonders of the World

There are several lists of 7 Wonders the World that could be considered the official lists, but everyone has there own interpretation on the wonders of the world. As I found this topic under the History section I think the most appropriate list to discuss is the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza: This architecture marvel built as the tomb for Khufu, pharaoh of Egypt, is the only ancient wonder of the world that remains in modern times. The Great Pyramid dates to about 2500 BCE. It is located within the modern city of Cairo, Egypt.

2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: Most of what is known about the gardens of Babylon comes from ancient Greek sources. There are no known Babylonian sources to describe them or first hand accounts. It is possible the gardens never existed or were exaggerated. The gardens are said to have been built around 600 BCE by the king to please his wife or concubine. The believed site of these gardens is on the Euphrates River near the modern day city of Baghdad, Iraq.

3. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia: This elaborate statue of Zeus was dedicated to Zeus as part of the Olympic Game traditions. The statue was made around 450 BCE. It was destroyed in a fire around 462 CE after being in Constantinople for some time. The original site of the statue was at the ancient city of Olympia on the western coast of modern day Greece.

4. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: This marble temple was considered to be a very beautiful one and was dedicated to the Greek goddess, Artemis. The temple considered the wonder was built around 550 BCE and was destroyed by fire in 356 BCE, although several temples existed on the site before and after this one. The temple was located in the ancient city of Ephesus, which is near modern day Izmir, Turkey.

5. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: This mausoleum was built as a tomb for the ancient Persian king, Maussollos, and was known for its beauty. The mausoleum was completed around 350 BCE. In the 1500s the blocks of the mausoleum were reused to build a castle by the Crusaders. The ruins of the castle and thus some of the mausoleum blocks can still be seen. The Mausoleum is located in the city of Bodrum, Turkey.

6. The Colossus of Rhodes: The Colossus statue was an large one of Helios, god of the sun, and guarded the harbor. The statue was completed in 282 BCE. It was destroyed by earthquake in 226 BCE and was not rebuilt because of an oracle. It stood at the entrance to the harbor on the island of Rhodes in modern day Greece.

7. The Lighthouse of Alexandria: This lighthouse was used in the ancient world to mark the flat coastline and alert of dangerous conditions by using fire at night and reflecting the sun's rays during daylight. The lighthouse was built around 300 BCE and was destroyed by earthquakes that left it in ruins in the 1300s CE. In the 1400 CE a fort was built where the lighthouse once stood. The lighthouse was located on the ancient island of Pharos, which is now part of Alexandria, Egypt.
