Short stories: Vacation experiences

getting better, too I think. Whereas I could hardly ask for directions in the beginning of the night, now I was telling my entire life story to the Cubana on my lap. I told her about how jazzed I was to be a medical student, how amazing my first year had been, and how excited I was to find myself in Cuba. Cuba, of all places! She maintained eye contact with me the entire time with her seductive chocolate-brown eyes and, although I could not be sure if she understood all of what I said, her gorgeous smile urged me to go on. And call me crazy but I could have sworn she was actually digging me.

I ran into one of my classmates a few hours later in the bathroom. He was drunk. I was plastered. We met by the wash basin, right next to the kindly old Cuban man giving out napkins by the door.

"This has got to be the most amazing night of my life," I slurred, splashing a handful of water on my sweaty face. The loud salsa music from onstage was muffled but still audible through the bathroom's thin walls.

"Tell me about it," my classmate replied. He had been a high school teacher years ago but any remnants of that past life were nowhere to be found.

"This is exactly what I pictured my trip to Cuba to be like," I said as I traded the man by the door a towel for a faded Cuban convertible.

"Oh, I pictured all this and more." The high school teacher grinned into the mirror, his eyes slightly droopy, and nudged me. "So what are you going to do about the Cubana you walked in with?"

I chuckled. "Oh, it's very simple. I'm going to have sex with her."

The high school teacher laughed. "Yeah?"

"Yes."

"And how much you do you think that will cost?"

"Well, perhaps a few bottles of rum more, a few more Cuba Libres-"

"No, I'm asking how much you think she's gonna charge you."

I laughed. "Oh come on now-"

"No, I'm being serious. How much is she going to charge you?"

I blinked. "Charge me?"

The high school teacher nodded.

"For what?"

"For sex, you idiot."

My eyes widened. I reached for another paper towel and looked at my classmate.

"You mean-"

"Come on, don't tell me you didn't know this entire time."

"But I mean you mean"

"Oh jeez, it's obvious."

"You mean those girls out there are HOOKERS?"

The high school teacher widened his eyes. "NO! You think?"

Oh dammit

It has never been my policy to pay for sex. Well, not directly, anyways. The moment my classmate brought that bit of truth to my attention, in my drunken haze everything began to come together. Of course she was a hooker! We were in a communist country,
