Suggested changes to improve the NFL

Improving the NFL is something that is not easy. There is nothing that can be done in order to perfect the league in the first place. Right now, there are 16 games in the regular season with a total of 12 teams in general competing to win the Super Bowl. While it may seem a bit unfair when it comes to teams having better records than division winners, remember that it is not perfect and it is a good thing that is not like that ridiculous system called the Bowl Championship Series.

One idea would be to get rid of the tie all together. Quite honestly, there are very few times in the league that even have one in the first place so what is the point of keeping something around that is not needed. It creates a potential mess as to who gets in the playoffs and who doesn't. It would be like saying it would involve being a victim of circumstance as it can make or break your teams chances of actually getting into the post-season.

A proposed idea would be to play until there is a winner. To keep the football players from being fatigue, overtime should be settled the way college football settles it as it works. See how it works over there? Apply that to the NFL and it will work and that way there could be the thought of eliminating a potential problem when it comes to post-season status.

If there is a tie in the division and the head to head match ups are identical, maybe there should be a final game to determine a playoff spot to see who gets in. This is commonly used in Major League Baseball and has been used in some cases to determine who gets the division or in some cases ends a tie on who gets a Wild Card spot.

Looking at the usage of instant replay, there needs to be a case where sometimes extremely difficult plays need to be reviewed regardless of the situation. At times, it can be very critical and can really make a difference in a game. If the wrong is made, then it will make it seem as if the referees were ensuring that the opposition would win. Let it go to the officials and have it reviewed but make the process go as fast as possible so that there are very few delays.

Ideas to improve the league are worth looking into without question. Whether these ideas get used would be another story. Honestly, if there is a case to get rid of ties completely, then by all means it should be done because of what it could mean on who gets in the post-season and who doesn't.
