with his hands up near its face. It pointed at me with both boney hands and I had no time to move or react. I felt like I was punched in both eyes at once, followed by what was like an ice cream headache; the kind of ache behind your eyes when you eat or drink something cold too fast. I fell backwards down the stairs and landed on my back at the bottom.
I tried to get to my feet and find my flashlight. The aching in my head made me disoriented and nauseous. Without the flashlight, all I could see was inky blackness. I heard the thing scurry through the attic away from me as if it was retreating. I went to wipe the sweat from my brow and felt pain that was so intense that I wanted to vomit. I must have been wounded by the blow to my head. I rubbed my eyes to regain focus and try to see with what little light there was. I felt my fingers jab into the sockets of where my eyes once were. Shock bolted through my body erasing the pain. In the soft intoxicating cloud of astonishment and shock, I probed my sockets gently and began to sob. I thought to myself, It's all over' and felt reality slipping away and passed out.
I was awoken by the sound of creaking floor boards from down the hallway. My face was wet from sweat and tears. My eyes were unfocused and looking through my own tears, I realized that it was all a dream. I began to laugh and wipe my tears away, happy to have to wipe them in order to see. I turned to see Nicole lying there peacefully sleeping.
I wondered who was in the hallway creaking around. I called out thinking it was my brother who probably had been kicked out of his house by his wife again.
"Steve?" I called out in a loud whisper.
No answer, but the creaking made its way to my open bedroom door and the hideous skeletal thing bolted strait for me and I felt its bony hands rip into my neck as he pulled. My flesh ripped and my neck snapped.
I sat bolt upright in bed. My lungs burning from being out of breath, my face soaked in a cold sweat. I looked around the room in shock. Now, I saw familiar things. Nicole was sleeping peacefully, my clock displaying 4:22, my bedroom, and my house.
I sat there until the dawn broke with its warm glow on the horizon. Nicole stirred and opened one eye and mumbled, "go back to sleep sweetie, it's too early and it's the weekend". She closed her eyes and was sleeping once again. I just sat there until the world awoke and proclaimed that this was reality and it was safe to get out of bed.
