Any idiot with a computer and access to the Internet can find and book an hotel on-line, the trick is finding the hotel that best serves your purpose at the lowest price. Always remember that the best hotel isn't necessarily the classiest, a smaller independent establishment can often offer a far more personal service than the big chains.
All of the big search sites will offer you pretty much the same hotel rooms at roughly the same price, although sometimes it is actually cheaper to book directly with the larger chains as they may offer a 'lowest price guarantee.' The clever Internet user will also search sites such as those provided by local tourist offices. These can be a great tool when looking for smaller independent establishments.
In some cases it is often cheaper to book an 'airport' hotel even when you are going to spend some time in a city. Not only do these hotels often offer free transportation to the hotel but more frequently than not there are good, fast transportation links into the city center. For the traveler who must be in the thick of it search sites such as yahoo are a fantastic tool, not for booking the actual hotel, but for checking up on local amenities and transportation links for those who prefer not to drive in a city they don't know.
If you have the luxury of booking well in advance you will almost certainly be able to find a bargain, but beware of trying to book a hotel with little or no time before you travel as leaving it too late may mean you have little or no choice. On the other hand, booking at the last minute may also net you a massive bargain. Many hotels will reduce prices at the last moment in order to fill rooms, however it is not advisable to hope that this eventuality will arise and leave booking until late if you can book well in advance. The money you might save by booking at the last minute will in no way compensate for the stress you might encounter when you fail to find a hotel in the locality you need to be in and are forced to accept something of a lower standard or much further away than you had originally planned. In some ways there can be a very fine balance between getting a bargain and getting exactly what you want. If this eventuality arises alway make the booking early if you know exactly where you want to stay. Yes you might end up paying a little more, but equally you will be kicking yourself if you end up having to pay massive cab fares to get to the city center every day!
The main tip for booking a hotel on-line is to search as many sites as possible, never rely on just one, and if the sites offer opinions from other travelers take heed of what they say, after all that fantastic hotel you just booked at rock bottom prices may just be in the red light district.......this writer speaks from experience!
