I claim not to like history. I remember many a year in school being bored in history class. However, The History Channel makes history interesting, even to those of us that don't seem to show an interest. To those who love history, like my son, this network is a haven! This is, by far, my son's favorite television network to watch. He often talks about the shows he watches on the History Channel and explains it with such excitement and animation, you'd think he just had the biggest adventure of his life!
Variety: (Rating - 10/10)
The History Channel covers a wide variety of topics from war to the universe. The network covers the serious and grim side of history as well as the happy and light side. They focus on the well documented history and also investigate the unknown or unexplained. The History Channel has a very wide range of programming and is well rounded enough that I think anyone can find something on the History Channel that would spark their interest.
Originality: (Rating - 10/10)
The History Channel travels in history where most networks wouldn't dream of going. This network can be extremely daring when tackling subjects such as religion. Sometimes the subjects agree with popular beliefs and other times, they stray from the norm to give the public a different perspective. Most of all, The History Channel forces you to think. They also cover topics in history that you wouldn't think about as history. One of my favorite series on this network is "American Eats", which covers the history of food. They profile the history of a different type of food such as cereal (my favorite episode). It doesn't sound interesting, but true to their form, the History Channel makes it interesting. This network has a unique way of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Quality of Programming: (Rating - 10/10)
"Cities of the Underworld" is the most watch show on the History Channel and just happens to be my son's favorite. It's no wonder. They go beneath the surface of cities, such as Dublin, Ireland, and delve into abandoned subway systems and underground tunnels to "dig up" the past. "UFO Hunters" is another popular show, and is my fiance's favorite show on the History Channel. Every show I've ever seen on the History Channel is very well made and of very high quality. In addition, the specials on this network are fascinating, to say the least.
The History Channel's programming is mainly made up of its series and specials. However, about 8% of the programming is movies. These movies have some sort of historical significance. Last weekend, I watched "Good Morning, Vietnam" on the History Channel. In between certain scenes of the movie, you would see the real life Adrian Kronauer, the main character in the movie. He's being interviewed and tells a bit about his real life experience. The movie is wonderful and the interview in between is interesting and gives it a new twist.
The History Channel does have some informational programming, but it only occupies about 8% of the networks' air time and is aired daily from 4 am to 6 am. This is acceptable and doesn't really take away from the effect of the network.
Overall: (10/10)
Overall, this is a wonderful network. It's informative and strays from the mundane history taught in schools. The History Channel sometimes goes beyond the politically correct to uncover the truth or to give a different point of view. I think the entire network is brilliant. The shows and specials are among the top quality in television.
