Humor: Life lessons learned from dogs

Living day by day gives our dogs a very unique outlook on life. Without words to say what they think or feel they've had to come up with other ways to get their point across. Instead of worrying about the future or the past dogs live simply for the moment, doing what their body and instinct dictates. For these reasons my dogs have taught me a couple of very important lessons.

1) The power of belief is important. My dogs truly believe the other side of the fence is greener. If we are walking with leashes they want to run and tug and play. If they are off leash they think they need to heel. Holes frequently appear in my yard only to appear on the other side when our yard is suddenly heaven compared to where they are.

2) Release destructive energy by chewing and digging holes in the furniture. Only by chewing. digging and running around with the zoomies' can you feel better about the current situation.

3) Bounding eagerly into a group of strangers produces wonderful sounds of panic. Especially if someone in that group has a child with them.

4) Biker's play chase if you lift a leg on the side of their bikes. For this to work there has to be daylight and a group of the leather-clad people standing around to witness. If you get the saddlebags or seat the overall effect is 100% better than getting the tires or frame.

5) Everything else is better than what you've got even if it's the same thing. Therefore, you must take everyone else's food, toys and beds to stash for when you finish with yours. Couch cushions and shoes make perfect caching spots.

6) Being ignored is not an option. Scream, whine, bark and paw at people until they pay attention. If those don't work, climb into their laps and start licking their ears and eyes until they give in.

My dogs teach me knew things about life everyday, usually in totally off-the-wall ways. They make me laugh and comfort me but most of all they trust me. Without dogs, I wouldn't be who I am, a strong, independent woman who knows how to laugh at any situation that comes along. They show me the path to brighter days and I appreciate every single thing I've learned from the fur-balls. I've gained more than a companion, I've gained family.
