I finally started understanding my son's behavior and soon learned how to see the world through his eyes.
We started teaching him to understand simple directions by putting index cards with easy to read step by step directions on them through out the house, for example; in the bathroom the card would have 1. brush teeth 2. comb hair 3. get dressed. This helped so much that the school let us put them in his locker at school and his class folders, and we color coded his folders for each class. School is becoming easier for him and his self esteem has been up lifted. He now is in the band and science club at school.
My son will always have a hard time understanding situation that may seem simple to anyone else, because he does not see things the way we do. We try to explain things as simple as we can and he will sometimes understand or get frustrated because he does not.
With all the new research on Aspergers, we are learning how to help our son manage his every day life and be successful. I am also now helping other parents with newly diagnosed Aspergers children and get them started on the right path to helping their children.
Now at any given day when I see him with his video games, deep in a world that I may not ever fully understand but still trying to, he stops only for a second to give me a smile, I know that he is happy.
I am thankful every day that God loved me so much that he gave me this special child to love and watch over.
