Home scenting: An overview

Does the early arrival of your valued guest set alarm bells ringing. Upon entrance to your home are they left pleasantly subdued with a relaxed demeanor, or, are they frantically trying to grab a window seat for that precious gasp of fresh air? If you answer is the latter then the sad truth of the matter is you have failed to master the science of home scenting.

Every home has an individual scent. Whether it derives from the food you eat, pets you keep, or the lifestyle you lead, we all have our own aroma. Although these smells may be pleasant for our own nostril needs, general outsiders may find these scents to become somewhat offensive.

So what are the key elements that play a role in balancing an atmosphere and creating that perfect home scent?

1. Essential Oils.
As the name suggest these oils are somewhat essential to smooth scenting. The oils are derived directly from plant sources and are of a very high quality, which in turn is reflected through the consumer price. As essential oils are 100% fragrance a small amount can be diluted with water to create a desired scent. These oils may be used in cleaning processes around the home. Usage is common in oil burners or water fountain displays. The addition of a few drops of essential oil to humidifiers, heating systems or air conditioning units act as an ingenious method to disperse the scent evenly. Sparsely dotting the home with the scent on items such as light bulbs, furniture throws, cushions and carpets will also enhance the scent of your home.

2. Fragrance Oils.
These oils are synthetically produced to duplicate the desired smells of nature. Whilst they are remarkably cheaper than their counterparts "fragrance oils" they do not contain the same high quality. Fragrance oils may be use in similar method to essential oils although it is appropriate to note that poorly produced oils can cause allergens, headaches and dizziness.

3. Scented candles.
One of the most popular methods of home scenting is through the use of candles. Typically candles are blended with fragrance oils to produce enticing smells coupled with a romantic ambiance when lit. Generally the term "what you pay for is what you get" springs to mind in reference to candle quality. Cheaper versions naturally use cheaper products. Candles containing pure essential oils can be purchased from stores catering for health and natural medicine. Whilst the initial payout is higher these candles also work for medicinal purposes such as stress relief and tension.
