Illegal immigration is a problem in the US, especially with many states that border on Mexico. Some people are afraid of the illegal immigrants, some are worried about a loss of American culture, some are worried about the jobs lost, some are worried about the change in language, and others are worried about other things. It is important to divide up what really matters, look at several options, and then come to a conclusive decision.
First, it is important to note that illegal immigrants should not be here - period. Many will disagree and say that they have just as much a right to be here as us, but those people would be wrong. Illegal immigrants are here illegally, these people have broken the law to come into the country. By living in this country, or any country, a person more or less agrees to follow the laws of the country. If a person does not follow the laws, that person must face the necessary punishments. An illegal immigrant is a criminal, and as criminals they should not be allowed to be free.
However, illegal immigrants are people. They are people who are probably trying to come here to make a better life for themselves and for their families. It is because of this that is almost unfair not to allow these people into our country, but it is fair not to allow them in illegally. A simple solution to this problem is to make it easier for them to come to the country legally and gain citizenship.
Often times illegal immigrants will come here and have children. The children, being born here, are legal citizens of the United States and have every right to be here. In cases such as these, the illegal immigrant parents should be told they have an option - take the child back with them to their home country and the child will be free to come back to the US anytime as s/he is a citizen, or they can leave the child here to be adopted. It is unfair to the child to have his or her citizenship revoked because of the parents committing an illegal act.
On top of allowing for easier access to the US, the borders should be strengthened. It is a security concern for people to illegally be showing up in the US and the government not having any idea as to who the people are or where the people are at. Also, if there is more of a chance of getting caught, and it is easier to gain access legally, this will discourage unlawful entry into the country.
Job loss for Americans should not be a concern when worried about legal immigrants. Illegal immigrants can work under the table for below minimum wage and beat American workers out, but legal immigrants cannot. Legal immigrants must be paid the same wages as citizens that are already here, and if a person is worried about losing his job to an immigrant for the same pay, then he should just do a better job than the immigrant giving the employer more incentive to keep the American worker.
Finally, there is language, and anyone who comes to the US should learn English. Many people will argue about this, especially because English is not our official language, but it should be. Our constitution and our laws are written in English, and for this reason alone everyone who lives here should learn English. Yes, these can be translated into other languages, but as anyone who speaks more than language will tell you - things are lost in translation. When dealing with issues such as law, the wording becomes very important and translating it back and forth with another language is definitely not practical.
In conclusion illegal immigration is bad, legal immigration is good, people born here are citizens, security is good, people should work hard to keep their jobs, and everyone in the US should speak English.
