Bed canopies have been around for thousands of years, probably just as long as there has been beds, there has also been bed canopies. Bed canopies can be made from a wide range of items, you may even have some of the items already laying about the house just waiting to be put into use.
One of my personal favorites is the mosquito net. I received mine as a Christmas present years ago, and it's been up ever since. You can wrap it right around a day bed and keep one side open, or place above the head of your bed on a ceiling hook and allow it to drape around the sides of the bed a little. Mosquito nets come in a wide range of colors and sizes, some even have pictures or decorations on them. Around the hoop at the top, you can place dangling beads, crystals, wind chimes, or ribbons and lace. At night wrapping the netting completely around the bed can provide a wonderful area to read a book before going to sleep.
You can use a sheet of fabric that you like, or perhaps even a bed sheet, to make a canopy as well. Pick a piece of fabric that is about 4 feet larger, on both sides, then the size of your mattress top. If you know how to sew, trying sewing lace all the way around the edges to give it a personal touch. About one and a half feet into each corner, use an elastic band to scrunch up about one inch of fabric, and then tie 15 inches of matching ribbons around each scrunch. Tie the ends of the ribbon together to make a loop on all four corners. Place 4 ceiling hooks about an inch out from each corner of the bed. Hang up the loops on each corner, and low and behold, your own one-of-a-kind canopy.
Using items, such as a ship sail, can make an interesting canopy. Try picking a fabric you like and cutting it into a different shape, such as a triangle, and hang it from the ceiling. Beaded curtains can be placed above your bed as well and either attached to the ceiling at both ends, or placed at the head of the bed and allowed to drape down the back. You could take thick-fabric cording and make rows that drape over the sides of the bed, or even use fabric curtain panels. If you want a natural look, try finding some sticks that you like and make an arrangement to screw into the wall and ceiling behind the head of your bed.
Canopies make for an interesting bedroom, and when they reflect your personal taste and style, can help make you feel more comfortable in your bedroom. Sweet Dreams!
