Being a science fiction and fantasy fan I feel it is my duty to help introduce non-science-fiction TV viewers to good quality science fiction TV. Lord knows there's been a lot of terrible science fiction and the bad stuff seems to cast a pall on the good shows. Many people don't realize how science fiction has changed television and how great science fiction can actually be. What I will list here is strictly science fiction. There are a lot of great TV series that can be put under the paranormal "umbrella" like Buffy, Angel, Twin Peaks but they are not science fiction. What irritates me is when horror, paranormal and fantasy are all put under the science fiction blanket. I just can't go along with that!
1. LOST - This show is in my opinion the best TV series ever, but I am a rabid fan so I'm partial. It is the accumulation of all the great sci-fi TV shows of the past boiled down into a rich, creative reduction and served with a side of realism! It has attracted people that normally wouldn't watch sci-fi as well as sci-fi fans. It's science fiction-like enough to keep sci-fi fans hooked and it has enough realism to attract non-science fiction lovers. That kind of talent is what makes a great show!
2. HEROES - Again, like Lost, Heroes can attract viewers all across the spectrum. Production values are gorgeous and it mixes elements of science and realism together to make the events in the story plausible. It's like watching an X-Men movie every week. A real treat and one of the best TV shows on air.
3. X-FILES - The X-Files is, in my opinion what brought respectability to the science fiction drama. It was a science-fiction show in the guise of a police procedural. Things didn't just happen; events were examined through medical examinations, police procedure and filtered through the minds of both a believer and a skeptic. An excellent show that kicked off a lot of great science fiction and paranormal shows that came later, like Moonlight, Bloodties, etc. Before the X-Files it seemed that most science-fiction shows made no attempt to dwell within the realms of a realistic world. X-Files brought some respectability to sci-fi and it was an excellent, award winning show to boot.
4. FARSCAPE - Very few sci-fi shows can just be all out sci-fi and be taken seriously or even be any good. Farscape was weird, wild and far out of the normal world, yet it worked. Combining Henson muppets with human characters and creating a universe that traverse strange alien worlds, dynamic

If it were not for sci-fi shows, there would be a whole generation growing up without an imagination. I say this because,
