Crichton's long enduring career in the written word and in film that throughout contains a though provoking "what if" of the scientific world. His work although clearly of the scientific genre, crosses boundaries with the thriller novel and this is perhaps another reason of his massive worldwide appeal.
9 Orson Scott Card 1951-present, Famous Works: Ender's Game (1985), (Speaker for the Dead, (1986).
American author most noted for the above science fiction novels that won consecutive science fiction awards. His novels contain many moral issues of personal political importance to the author and come across in the language and characters of his work.
10 Douglas Adams 1952-2001, Famous Work: The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy (1979).
Included in the list for the groundbreaking comic science fiction series initially written for radio "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy," would breed many cult followings for its innovation and comic value. Douglas Adams also wrote several episodes of "Doctor Who" for TV as well as a selection of other works both science fiction and non science fiction. He was also a keen advocate of technology, predicting the use of email and instrumental in the use of computer game technology as well as a flagship Macintosh user.
Far from being seen as "low" literature, as was once labelled alongside its sibling the fantasy novel, science fiction is now being studied as a genre of academic importance within its own right. Science fiction pushes the boundaries of the real world, exploring technologies and posing questions that impact upon our daily lives without most people even realizing it. It is the science fiction novel that sometimes helps us to see the possibilities of our own time and place. Sometimes we need to look far away in order to see the things in the front of our eyes.
