There are fundamental defects in the public perception and US military intelligence regarding the war on terror in Afghanistan. These problems are behind the increasing insurgency being witnessed there and may result in failure if unchecked. The errors include:
1. There were 4 attacks on Afghanistan in recent times: one by the Colonial power, Britain, one by USSR (1979-1989) and two by US (1998, 2001).There has been a history of invasions of Afghanistan especially by super powers. This is a rallying point for Al Qaeda-all invasions have been very difficult and usually ended in failure to conquer the natives. This difficulty arises from local support for resistance to foreign attackers and the mountainous nature of Afghanistan.
2. Poppy fields are not a legitimate source of funding for the Mujahideen. The Holy Koran forbids trading in intoxicating beverages and alcohol and this is definitely not allowed for holy warriors of Islam. This constitutes unIslamic employment and disqualifies Al Qaeda and her local allies from praying, touching the Koran or even interpreting it. This ought to have been used to stop al Qaeda recruitment and the opium trade itself if properly discussed with Muslim scholars and leaders.
3. Each contending superpower struggled to give aid to Afghanistan during the Cold War: the United States and the USSR struggled to curtail the favor of the Afghani ruling class during the Cold War. This took the form of grants, provision of technical experts and infrastructural development. The present United States Government, under President Bush, is committed to developing the country especially given the fact that Al Qaeda exploits the illiteracy and poverty of the people to operate. However investments can not thrive in an unsafe environment. Islam forbids such acts and identifies Al Qaeda as Satanists trying to kill us all with poverty.
4. Mujahideen do not operate using factions: Islam forbids divisions and parties arguing and fighting: Surat al Anam verse 159 of the Holy Koran. The interview between Prophet Muhammad and Satan reveals that Muslim disunity is Satan ringing his bells and the Sunni follow the Sunnah (path of Prophet Muhammad) not the devil's way of killing the faith (iman) of Muslims.
5. Suicide is unIslamic and leads to Hell! This means that Al Qaeda leaders are deceiving the people using their lack of knowledge and morals. This involves concealment of religion which shows them clearly as Satanists and Antichrist forces impersonating Islam. When Muslims realize this, there would be an uproar and al Qaeda will be destroyed
Finally, the solution to the problems of terrorism and poor capacity building facing the nascent democracy in Afghanistan is to develop the educational system: industrial schools and cooperative education with time management, a shift system, multiple streams of income using online jobs and diversification plan. Handicapped people, victims of the war and women should also be involved and can invest in the project while patronizing. This provides capacity building and an economic deterrence to conflict that strengthens democracy better than guns and bombs can. This can build a new Afghanistan
