Short stories: Sundays with the family

Ahhhhh Sundays, what's not to love about Sundays? After working in the fields for 12 hours a day 6-days a week, Sunday is the best day.

Rise and shine early to the smell of bacon, potatoes, and corn bread cooking. The kids are still sleeping from exhaustion of the week. They are allowed to sleep till 7 a.m.! At 7 sharp the house becomes full of excitement. Everyone is happy for the day off and to just enjoy the day. After everyone has had their fill of a warm, delicious sit down meal they help clean the kitchen.

The kids round up their favorite kick ball and head outside for play time. Some of the older children get their widdling sticks to finish a carving they started last Sunday. Dad goes out on the wrap around deck with his pipe and book and sits in his favorite rocker and enjoys the sun.

Meanwhile, mom is humming in the kitchen frying chicken and making her famous potato salad for Sunday brunch that will be held at the church at 3 o'clock.

One o'clock mom heads to the bedroom, runs a bath and soaks in lavender. After her bath she puts on her favorite dress, combs her long hair and braids it around her head. Clean, refreshed, smelling good, and looking fabulous she calls for the children to come in to get ready.

One by one the children bath and dress in their Sunday best. Dad, dressed in his suit is proud of his family and is smiling at his family as they head to the horse and carriage for the ride to town. The sermon that day was about family time and the need for strong ties. The preacher talks about the importance of everyone of the family.

After the sermon everyone heads outside, spreads blankets all over and enjoys the meals prepared just for this day. Sunday is the day that all the farmers and townsfolk get to enjoy relaxing conversations with one another.

Fast forward to 2008, Sunday is the day for sleeping in very way late. Once awake it's time to do the laundry. Yell at the kids to clean their room that they've neglected to do all week. Their numerous games, toys, and clothes are all over the place. No one goes outside to enjoy the sun because there is still so much to catch up from the week. After everything is sorta cleaned up they head up town to get the shopping done for the week to come.

When the shopping and cleaning is done a pizza is popped in the oven for dinner. Everyone grabs a piece, one heads to the bedroom to play Nintendo, another heads to computer room to play games online another heads to the living room to watch their favorite TV show
