Friendship is important for the emotional well-being of humans. Our need for social interaction and interdependent relationships is a survival instinct passed down through our genes. In modern times friendship has taken a position on the back burner and many people truly don't understand what makes a good' friend. Things that make good friends, that every friend should have or be include the following.
1) Loyalty is important in any relationship. Loyalty is defined as faithfulness or a devotion to a person or cause. It means no back-stabbing, playing sides or running off when things start to get rocky. A friend who is loyal will defend a person to a reasonable degree.
2) Honesty also plays vital role in a great friendship. The ability to truthfully answer questions or simply have a heart-to-heart conversation is a building block. Friends who lie are not true friends because lying hurts people and relationships.
3) Tact is defined as careful consideration of one's current situation and surroundings, and acting accordingly Tactfulness goes hand-and-hand with honesty. An example of tact would be a friend asking how they look for their date and instead of blurting out Oh My Gosh! That's hideous!' (which may be the truth) you say something like I don't really think it compliments your (hair, eyes, whatever) well, lets see if we can find something to help.'
4) Empathy can make or break a relationship of any kind. The inability to empathize with another's plight causes you to appear cold-hearted and detached. Empathy is the ability to understand another's situation, view-point or feelings. If you can empathize with another's plight, you can connect with them on a much deeper level.
5) Good friends are giving by nature. They return favors, think of one another and generally have a facultative symbiosis. Each makes sacrifices for the other and shows appreciation and gratitude.
6) Humor. Every friend needs a sense of humor otherwise there won't be any fun. Laughing together about drama brings people together while doom-and-gloom tears people down.
7) Individuality. A good friend has their own style, ideas and beliefs. Friends respect each other's individuality and encourage it.
8) Trust
9) The lack of an ulterior motive
10) Good listening skills.
Friendships are important which means that we all need to be good friends so that we can keep the bonds of our relationships together. If we only care about ourselves, blow people off or simply fail to reciprocate positive actions and emotions we will soon find ourselves alone in the world. Foster the above within yourself and you will find your friendships blossoming into deeply meaningful ties.
