I can think of two ways to get your child interested in reading. First, they must see you read. If you enjoy reading, they will see that and it will build a desire in them. If they never see you read, they will likely not view it as either fun or important.
Secondly, read to your child, starting at a very early age. Allow them to sit in your lap and look at the book. Allow them to ask questions about the story and the words. It will encourage them to begin reading along with you. Again, it will show them that reading is important and desirable.
We started doing both of these with our daughter shortly after she was born. When she could sit in our laps, we let her. As we read, you could almost tell she was trying to read along. She began reading by herself around the age of four and now, at eleven, she is reading almost three grade levels ahead, and prefers reading to many other activities.
