Everyone seems to have a blog these days, and those that do not are probably thinking about starting one. For those of you who are unfamiliar with blogs and blogging, I will provide you with a short explanation. A blog is a website where a person posts messages on certain topics. The writing and posting of the messages is referred to as blogging or to blog. There are blogs that consist of commentary on specific topics or news stories, there's blogs about politics, the media, sports, fashion, business and so forth. For any topic you can think of, there is probably someone blogging about it.
Then there are also blogs that are more personal, like online journals. It is especially these kinds of blogs that appear to be extremely popular. It seems like these days everyone feels the need to share their private lives with the world. That is another important characteristic of a blog, unless you make specific restrictions anyone who wants to can read your blog, and they often have the opportunity to comment on your blog as well. Even though I have a blog myself, I find it really hard to understand what motivates people to go out of their way to put all of their personal business out there for the whole world to see. You would think that most people might prefer to keep some things to themselves.
I would certainly think that more people would want to keep their privacy and if not, they should at least respect the privacies of others, like their friends and family that they mention in their blogs. Then again, we have all seen the craze with reality TV shows, where everyone and anyone wanted to show all on national television for no reason but to be a celebrity for a day. I guess blogging, just like reality television, is just another form of exhibitionism. Moreover, if you want to share your private life with the world, there probably is no better way to do it than via the internet.
Technorati, a blog search engine tracking blogs from all over the world, shows on their website that they are currently tracking over 112 million blogs. They do not specify how many of those can be considered personal online journals, however, I am sure it is a big percentage of blogs. With that many blogs on the internet, not every blog can be read by millions, and a lot of bloggers might have to accept that their blog will not be very popular. For most bloggers though, this does not seem to be much of a problem, because they seem to be mainly blogging for fun.
