Why children believe that not doing school work is 'cool'

I know that this is not a debate discussion but I think that this is an unfair topic "Why do kids believe that not doing school work is ... cool?" I just recently only a few months ago left secondary school and all of the people I went to school with didn't do some work they were told to, but it wasn't because they thought it was "cool" most of the time it was because we didn't see the point of doing some pieces of work instead of others, I'll give a example I refused to do an essay on Macbeth when asked why I simply said that I knew for a fact that it would not be of any use to me what so ever of course I was punished for taking a stand but the fact is I didn't refuse to do it because I thought it was "cool" and most kids today don't do it for that either.

They do it because for arguments sake have never expressed an interest in Shakespeare yet one of the first things you and taught in secondary school is Shakespeare and the reason for people saying that we do it to look "cool" in front of our mates is that no one has taken the time to ask us what we think we should learn.

Since it is our education one would think that we should get the choice but there are some people who do listen to our complaints but in the end it just gets given a person who couldn't care less what kids want. To be honest I think that kids would benefit more from learning what they want to but of course you will always get at least one politician who would say it is not "cost effective" to do which in my opinion is basically saying that we can't be bothered with the work and yes I do realize that it would take a while and that it won't be easy but I think if we don't, we might as well reintroduce capital punishment as insurance to make sure they learn what the government want them to. People seem to be forgetting that these kids are the future of our country so shouldn't we try and the best we can for them while their still in school, the only things that seem to be changing is uniforms and the colour of books, it's easy to say that kids aren't doing school work because they think it's cool? It's the easy way to cover up a bigger promblem.

P.S Just to make one last point most of the things I know today that have been helpful I learned either outside or after school.

Thank you for reading this.
