There are currently 16 Smithsonian museums. Most of them are located in Washington, D.C. with one being in Virginia and one being in New York City. The DC museums are the Anacostia Community Museum, Arts and Industries Building (currently closed for renovation), Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of African Art, National Museum of American History (closed until summer 2008 for renovation), National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian, Naitonal Portrait Gallery, National Postal Museum, National Zoological Park, Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery, and Smithsonian Castle. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, VA. The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is in New York City.
Anacostia Community Museum: This museum is with exhibits on themes of African American history and culture. It is located in the Anacostia neighborhood of DC, which is where many free blacks settled before and after the Civil War. The museum also places emphasis on community history.
Arts and Industries Builing: This is the original home of the National Museum. It is currently closed in preparation from renovation. The building is one among the Smithsonian buildings on the National Mall.
Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery: These galleries housed in buildings on the National Mall contains art from America, Asia, the Middle East, and Egypt. The art varies in media including paintings, sculpture, glass, metalwork, and ceramics.
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gallery: This art museum is dominated by sculptures inside and out, although it does often have temporary exhibits containing art of other mediums. The donut shaped museum and the garden are located on the National Mall.
National Air and Space Museum: This museum focuses on the history of flight and space exploration. There are exhibits on the invention of planes, humans in space, and the scientific study of space. There are many historic planes and space vehicles in full original form hanging from the ceiling in the atrium.
National Museum of African Art: The museum is located on the National Mall. The exhibits feature African art including ceramics and sculptures.
National Museum of American History: This museum is closed for renovation until summer 2008 and is located on the National Mall. The exhbits portray aspects of American History including the Presidents,
