Ideal models of democratic government

Australia - birthplace of the right to vote even if you don't own land, and the right to vote anonymously.

A free and open society that operates without the need of a constantly changing bill of rights. Although with our current government's policies things may need to change.

Becoming a republic is a necessary path for the country to take. Removal of the Union jack from our flag and the monarchy as head of state will lead to greater reconciliation between Aboriginal and European Australia. Australia needs to make amends for British mistreatment of indigenous peoples in the past. Our biggest embarrassment should be, and is, the treatment of indigenous Australians and our treatment of legitimate asylum seekers.

Why are we a great example of democracy? Because we can admit our faults, make steps to fix them and discuss them without persecution. Australia is an example of how people can come from all over the world and live in relative harmony (contrary to many prejudiced and unbalanced media reports). No great conflicts have been fort upon our soil. From a country of convicts and political prisoners of England, we have come a long way in a short period of time. Our next step should be a change of government to ensure we maintain our "fair go" attitude.

Singapore? I thought it was close to being a dictatorship? Free speech?

Britain? Well it certainly led the way after its civil war contrary to modern American opinion. With a monarchy that now appears almost symbolic, the former powerhouse of world trade surprisingly changes with the times. Their record on Northern Ireland is atrocious.

Switzerland? A country that benefited from Jewish money and burying its head in the sand when conflicts and great injustice rages around them. Beautiful, yes. But when the people vote on whether an immigrant can stay after looking at their photograph, it opens up a whole "can of worms" for racism. Doesn't it? Certainly their system of referendums is one to be admired.

The US? It appears only the wealthy, with big business support, can lead the country. Rumours of vote tampering in the 2000 election should surely leave a blemish on their record? A nation that began on great principles may have lost its way whilst the far-right Christian movements take control.
