Diapers and bottles, car seats and bibs. There is so much to think about before bringing your new baby home. One of the biggest considerations is what kind of crib to buy. Babies spend much of their time sleeping, so you'll want to choose a crib that is both comfortable and safe. There are several different types to choose from in a variety of styles and a variety of price ranges. Let's take a look at some of the most popular choices.
Standard Crib - This is the classic style of baby crib and the most common type available. You can get either a single drop side, where just one side can be raised and lowered, or a double drop side. Drop sides allow easy access for lifting the baby or changing diapers. If you plan to place the crib against a wall, a single drop side is all you need. Standard cribs are available in many finishes including oak, cherry, and white. Some include a drawer underneath for extra storage.
Convertible Crib - Similar to standard cribs, a convertible usually has one or two drops sides and takes a regular crib-size mattress. The difference is that a convertible crib can be changed into a toddler bed and sometimes into a twin-size bed. A convertible crib is usually more expensive than a standard crib but your child will be able to use it for many years. The one drawback of a convertible is that it ties you down to a particular style and color for the long term.
Canopy Crib - A canopy crib is just like a standard crib with the addition of a post at each corner to hold a canopy. This type of crib often looks more formal and elegant depending on the type of fabric you choose for the canopy. Canopies are a popular choice for baby girls because they tend to look very feminine.
Round Crib - A fairly new choice for parents-to-be is the round crib. This style can be rather expensive but is becoming more popular. Round cribs allow access to the baby from all sides and are great for babies who move around a lot. The drawback with round cribs is the limited selection and price of bedding.
Portable Crib - Many parents purchase a portable crib in addition to the nursery crib. These cribs are often called play yards because they can be used like a playpen as well as a place to sleep. Portable cribs are available with many different features including changing table inserts, removable bassinets, attachable mobiles and toys, storage pockets, and even sun shades. Portable cribs fold up for travel and usually come with a carrying case. They fit easily in trunks of most cars.
Other Crib Options - Other sleep choices for your new baby include cradles, bassinets, and bedside co-sleepers. These options allow you to have your baby close by at all times but they are designed for newborns and can only be used for the first few months.
Whatever type of crib you decide on, it is important to keep safety in mind. Make sure the crib you buy is from a reputable manufacturer and meets safety regulations. These include having no more than 2 3/8" between the slats, no corner posts, and top rails that stand at least 26" above the top of the mattress. Following these guidelines will ensure that your new bundle of joy will be safe and sound in whatever kind of crib you choose.
