Congrulations! You are the proud owner of a tiny Chihuahua pup. Being the tiniest dog in the world makes the Chihuahua extremely extraordinary. These pint size pups enter the world weighing 2.5 to 5.5 ounces. At three months, they range from fifteen to forty five ounces, and at six months, they usually weigh between 1 and 3/4 to five pounds. The weight of a full size Chihuahua should not exceed over six pounds. Their estimated height can vary within range, starting at six and nine inches tall when full grown. Adopting this delightful breed is like bringing home a new "baby," and should be treated as such.
Now that you have brought your new puppy home, he will need a warm soft bed to call his own. An inexpensive one could be made by placing a soft blanket over a large pillow. You will want to be close by if he wakes up and cries, so it is important not to leave him alone for the first few weeks. If he cries, you can soothe him by using the gentle tone of your voice. Some might even consider placing a tiny clock beneath his blanket. By doing this, the noise from the clock will be similar to the heart beat of his mother and will make him feel safe.
Temperament
Often the temperament of a Chihuahua is compared to a terrier. Though they are particularly curious, they are rather confident, high spirited, and lively. This type breed is very loyal to its owner and is an outstanding watchdog who is quick to defend his home and family members. These playful little creatures are very intelligent and love to cuddle with their owner. Because of their sensitivity to cold temperatures, it is not recommended to leave this breed of dog outdoors. On the other hand, they love the sun for warmth, but they can suffer from a heatstroke if exposed to direct sunlight.
Housebreaking
Chihuahu a pups will usually relieve themselves every two or three hours. As they mature, they can hold their needs much longer. First you will need to put a puppy training pad next to his bed. Put his food and water bowl close to the training pad. After he eats or drinks, set him on the pad and say "go potty." You will want to repeat these steps every 30 minutes to help remind him where to go to the toilet. Get your Chihuahua accustomed to going to the training pad first thing when he wakes up, then again before he goes to bed. Each time he makes a deposit, tell him "good dog," and reward him with a treat. Until your Chihuahua learns where to eliminate, there will be times when he forgets and has an accident. Scold your puppy by using a firm voice, not by shouting or screaming, or using a rolled up newspaper. Doing this will only frighten and confuse him. Always remember, he is just a baby, and you would never spank a child for making a mistake. Be patient! Always remember to reward your pup whenever he uses the toilet correctly.
Information that can be misleading
There have been many labels that have been attached to this significant breed, such as teacup, tiny toy, pocket size, miniature, and standard. These terms have been used for many years to attract the buyer into believing that Chihuahua puppies who have been described in such a way are of much greater value. These specifics are incorrect and can also be misleading.
Often there will be an unusually small pup in a litter. The description for this size puppy should be referred to as a small Chihuahua. Any other label would only confuse the buyer into believing the smaller Chihuahua is a very rare breed. Though they are certainly adorable and cute, if a potential buyer is seriously considering the small Chihuahua, it is important that the breeder inform them that they require additional care and attention for their good health and well being.
