A few weeks ago, I had found a sample bottle of my favorite fragrance, Clinique's "Happy Heart" from when I became addicted to the stuff and bought a bunch of it on eBay, and squealed with joy! I hadn't visited the Clinique counter at Macy's in a long time due to a tight budget, so getting to have that scent again even for just one day was a thrill. Memories swirled in my mind as I took a whiff of my favorite scent: the day I met my husband for the first-time at Carpaccio's. The smell took me back to that day very vividly, and it made me so happy to have a scent to associate with such a lovely memory.
But apparently, I wasn't the only one who was struck by Happy Heart. My husband was too. When he woke up and came to give me a hug, he took a whiff of my neck and said fondly, "I remember that smell." I responded, "from the first time we met?" And he said, "Yeah,I remember that smell from the beginning of our relationship. It's very nice." So you see, men also associate scent with happy memories.
For me, scents create or enhance a mood, or do both. A dabble of Victoria's Secret's Sexy Little Things and I feel sexy and cute. Dior's J'Adore makes me feel elegant and sophisticated. And they have this magical ability to take me back. For example, I used to wear the Smell This! line when I was a teenager and one day the line just disappeared. No longer would I smell like cookie dough, fresh clean sheets, or the beach. I was very disappointed. But when I moved to Baltimore, Maryland to go to school, lo and behold, they had the line at Wal Mart! I was thrilled and bought all three scents and wore them through college and then I moved back home to Miami and it disappeared again.
Personally, I'm the type of person that can be pessimistic or downtrodden at times. But I'll tell you one thing; I cannot think of a single memory attributed to a fragrance that isn't positive. They all center around the warmest memories in my life, and I encourage others to also wear their favorite scents and purchase long lost scents when you find them to give yourself that boost.
