Of all the resources that the world furnishes us with, water is one of the most abundant. After all, 2/3rds of the earth is covered with the stuff.
It is rather ironic then when you consider that only 3% of that water is fresh water. Two thirds of that 3% is tied up in the ice caps, leaving just about 1%. Of that 1%, about 9/10 is either atmospheric, or held in the ground. The rest, about 0.01% is readily available in rivers and streams.
I think it was Samuel Coleridge in his well known Rime of the Ancient Mariner, who wrote"Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink."
Jesus said: Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.
I recently saw a television program that highlighted the scandal that is the bottled water industry, not to mention the gullibility of the buying public.
Now I admit that not everyone will share this view point, but it seems ridiculous that people are prepared to pay 100's if not 1,000's of times more money for a product that they have to carry home from the supermarket, when they have the same stuff of a more often than not, better quality coming through the taps in their own homes.
According to the makers of the program, the impact of the transportation of all this water in plastic bottles which are then discarded is huge.
There is much irony in the fact that very often the types of people who would drink bottled water for its claimed health benefits are often concerned about environmental issues and yet are contributing to the environmental problems that are being highlighted in our world today. The carbon footprint' of a bottle of water is many many times higher than the same amount of water taken from a tap in your own home. The amount of plastic discarded is shocking, not to mention the environmental impact of transporting the stuff from all over the world. And in addition it seems hugely immoral that in our world today, the pointless multi-million pound bottled water industry enjoys enormous success, whilst at the same time people are dying for lack of clean drinking water.
Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.'
Thirst! In our society, with water on tap and shops filled with a bewildering variety of soft drinks, I imagine that
