As an owner of both pieces of technology I would certainly choose to have a desktop over a laptop if I could only have one. Of course the answer is going to be different for everyone because not everyone uses a computer for the same purposes. I like to download and burn movies, music, and photos. I also have a habit of keeping my computer on for long periods of time.
I own a laptop and within a year of use the hard drive blew out and I did not keep it constantly running. The battery is becoming worn and the AC cord is splitting. I am shocked the LCD screen hasn't gone out by now. My laptop was also not the cheapest of prices out there.
The really annoying thing about laptops is that they are outdated within one month after it was brand new. Desktops do not seem to out-date themselves quite as fast.
Desktops last longer in the long run because they are equipped with the proper fans to cool the hard drive down and keep it cool. There are no lithium batteries, or any batteries that have the chance to dwindle down. The cords are not reputed to become stripped and wires broken.
Laptops are fine if you are the type of person who seldom uses a computer and do not download large files such as movies. If you are conscious of spending costs then desktops are less expensive and just as good as laptops. Sometimes even better.
I feel safer with the desktop because it backs me up whenever the laptop needs to be in for repairs. Now I rarely use my laptop because I am not made of money. I can't go through five laptops in three years.
Desktops are also much more useful for gamers because you can fit more memory cards in a desktop and they are great with keeping the heat of the hard drive low. You can also fit two or more graphics cards in desktops than in laptops. Since everything in a desktop can be customized completely then they can be upgraded more.
Desktops are also reputed for their higher speeds. They have a faster CPU, memory buses, and faster hard drives. They're also much more reliable and have less breakdowns.
The only major advantage to a laptop is that they are portable and can be used anywhere. Many would argue that this is the only good factor to laptops.
