person wishes not to offend the hostess, but partly, this person wants to exceed the limit, "just this one time".
To avoid overeating, one must first figure out the cause of his overeating. If it is for comfort, other ways to comfort one's self need to be learned. Things like soaking in a tub of warm to hot water can be soothing. Getting a massage, talking a walk, calling a friend and venting are other ways to release the discomfort and ease the pain. If the discomfort happens frequently, then perhaps the person may need to check out counseling as a means of getting to the core of the problems.
Using food as companionship can be replaced by adding people to one's life. Taking initiative, and calling someone, or inviting someone over to one's home or out to a movie or shopping can be a door opener for a friendship. Many people are lonely, and are waiting for someone else to take that first step. People tend to eat less when with a companion than by themselves at home.
Food addictions are difficult to break. Choosing to not have the addictive items in the house is the first step. Saying "no" when these foods are offered is also difficult to do. Like an alcoholic, one may find that he needs outside help, like Over eaters Anonymous, a 12-step group for people with food addictions. Or have an understanding friend to help walk him through the process of giving up the foods.
Loss of self control can happen to an average person as well as to a bulimic. Anyone can "go crazy" at one time or another and eat everything in sight. If this type of behavior persists, then outside help is needed to get to the root cause of the problem. It is obviously some type of behavioral or psychological issue.
And finally, there is the social eater who eats too many calories "just this one time", which turns out to be nearly every occasion. This person is not seeking help, but rater enjoys his food, and is not concerned about weight or health issues, even if there may be a reason to be. This person is not to the point where their over eating is apparent to him, yet. But one hope it will become so in the near future.
Overweight people have more problems with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and chronic knee and leg problems than the general public. Overeating is not healthy. So it would do a person well to find out why he overeats, and then make the needed corrections in order to live a long and happy life.
