Its easy to transfer your CD's to your IPOD, but moving those old vinyl LP records to MP3 is a little tricky. Read my article and you will be playing those old tunes in no time. You will also want to visit my article: How to Separate Tracks.
Things You'll Need:
Turntable
Receiver with phono input
Or a pre-amp unit
Stereo Audio cable with white/red connectors one end and 1/8" stereo headphone pin on the other end.
Old vinyl records
Computer with audio
Audio recording software
CD Burner
Step 1:
Collect your parts: Turntable (check) Vinyl Records (check) Assorted cables (check) Computer with sound card (check) Pre-Amp.. Oh oh.. Where do I find such a relic of the past? The internet of course! TIP: If you have a pre amp, skip this section. Everyone else, look at your oldest receiver or stereo-system on hand.
Step 2:
When collecting your cables, be sure to get a connector with 3 bands of metal on it. These are your connections and you need left, right, ground. Also make sure you plug into the correct jack. Make sure its NOT the microphone jack. The microphone input is a MONO connection and will always result in a mono recording that is less than good quality.
Step 3:
TIP: If you do not have a turntable or a receiver, you can consider a new gadget called a USB turntable. It will cost you $100 but if you do not have the parts this could be a practical option. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Ion-iTTU SB-Turntable-USB-Record/dp/B00 0BUEMOO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF 8&s=electronics&qid=1201962344 &sr=8-1
Step 4:
Look at your stereo. If it was made in the year 2000 or earlier, It should have an input called PHONO. Score! One PHONO Pre amp. You may move to the next section. What? No phono? New stereos do not have a phono input. If this is you, copy/paste the link below and order a pre amp. http://www.amazon.com/Behringe r-Microphono-PP400-Phono-Pream p/dp/B000H2BC4E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_ 4?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instrument s&qid=1200602102&sr=8-4 http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PP- 999-Phono-Turntable-Pre-Amp/dp /B00025742A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8 &s=electronics&qid=1200602280& sr=1-2 TIP: The old receiver is the cheapest way to dig up a pre-amp in the 21 century.
Step 5:
Ok We all have the parts we need, Let's put the rig together. Connect your turntable to your receiver's PHONO Input or preamp's INPUT. Now Connect the receiver's TAPE OUT or the preamp's OUTPUT to your PC's Audio Card via the Blue jack on your soundcard. Note: the TAPE-OUT might be called TAPE RECORD.
Step 6:
Connecting to the computer's sound card:
