College football is more popular than professional football for a variety of reasons. While there will always be a debate over which of the two types of football is better, my vote goes towards college football. Here is a quick list of several of the reasons that I believe that the college game is far superior to the NFL's professional version of the sport.
#1: The Controversy. Like it or not, people love controversy, and part of it is because people like to complain. The lack of a play-off in college football creates that, and when it feels like a sub-par team makes the Super Bowl, people just don't watch, when that happens in college, there's something to complain about!
#2: Every game matters. If you lose in week one, there's a chance you can't make the national title game. No other sport can make a claim like that, and that's what makes every game on every weekend so important and exciting. This also makes every rivalry that much more heated.
#3: The Rivalries. It's not just sports teams in the same division, it's entire schools hating on one another, both in and out of conference. In some states, a college rivalry game can be the biggest sports event of the year (Alabama vs. Auburn, Iowa State vs. Iowa).
#4: Fans love underdogs. Not only underdogs, but in the NFL even underdogs are millionaire professionals. In college underdogs are kids 17-24 years old, most of whom will never even sniff the professional leagues. So when a lot of kids who won't go to the NFL are tied with a powerhouse team full of future NFL players, you love to cheer.
#5: The culture. College football is a culture. It's about road trips to the bowls. It's about amazing tail gate parties. It's about singing "Sweet Caroline" during half time. It's about being a part of something a lot bigger than sports-a culture.
Simply put, the college game is better. There's nothing like watching kids play their hearts out for a game they love, for a school they love, and there's a connection between the college teams and the fans that you just can't replicate on the professional level. Give me college football any day of the week.
