The best fantasy websites are many. Are you a beginner or a professional? Do you want a history of fantasy writing? Do you want information on the latest publications or are you a fantasy writer seeking an outlet? Some websites are companion spin-offs from fantasy print magazines. Some are specialized in fantasy art, movies or books. Some are open to contributions of fantasy writing. Some attempt a comprehensive offering of all things fantasy. To eke out the best is not easy.
So, the following list has been compiled suggesting best websites for specific needs. The first collection relate only to fantasy. The second is combined with science fiction.
1. Fantasy specific websites
(a) The best fantasy website for beginners
The Beginner's Guide to Fantasy Fiction is a website for readers and librarians. It offers an initial explanation of the fantasy genre and sub genres. 10 fantasy selections are recommended, (mainly series), as an introduction. Each is linked to more detailed information. J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" sequence and Ursula K. LeGuin's "The EarthSea" tetrology are included on the list. The list claims to suit readers of all ages. Then there are more listings and bibliographical sources.
(b) The best fantasy websites for discussions, reader recommendations and latest reviews
The Fantasy Finder broadens into discussions and reviews of fantasy literature. The website authors offer a "best classic fantasy list" and a "Top 5" fantasy book list, but there is space for contributors to recommend their personal list of favorites. On a message board, it is possible to request recommendations and/or make comments on those of others. The Fantasy 100 website includes reviews of fantasy books, films and TV shows. The website declares that "The lists are based on statistical surveys of popular polls, award information and critical opinion."
(c) The best epic fantasy websites
Castle Fiction.com favors epic fantasy and all things medieval but includes fantasy books, movies, costumes, free stuff and quotes. Epic-Fantasy.com features fantasy reading, writing, blogs, podcasts, audio and audio books. Fantasy products including swords are advertised for sale. It even includes a special, informative section on designing fantasy websites.
