Evaluating the worth of Netflix: Readers share their experiences

Netflix has truly changed the face of movie rental; it is an in-genius concept and is growing in popularity rapidly. It was suggested to me by a friend and I must confess, I doubt I'll ever use Blockbusters again. Allow me to share with you why indeed it is so successful. If you are not already a convert I hope to sway you by the end of this article.

Basically, we pay $13 a month and are permitted to have in possession up to three DVD'S at a time. They are conveniently sent straight to our house through the post and once we have watched one, we simply seal it back in the return envelope and pop it back in the post. Once Netflix has this DVD back, they in turn send the next DVD you request. If you are prompt in watching and returning the movies you can watch ten plus in just one month; that really is a lot of movies for a very low price.

A month or so before being introduced to Netflix my husband and I were in our local Blockbusters, selecting movies. We chose three, and naturally succumbed to a tub of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream which sat alluringly by the check-out till. $15 was our total. This is comparatively expensive for solely three movies. I remember uttering to my husband that we had to (as we were trying to save money for the impending birth of our first child) make this the only Blockbuster trip of the month. A pretty deflating thought if you are avid movie-watchers like us.

So we see how cost effective Netflix is- as many movies as you can watch within one month as long as you only have three DVD's at home at any one time. Incidentally, you have the option to pay slightly more to have four at a time or pay less still and have two. There are numerous pay schemes for every sized wallet.

But there is much more. As aforementioned, the convenience is a huge benefit for all patrons. Once you have finished watching the movie, you simply slip it back into the return envelope it is sent to you in with a helpful self-adhesive seal and put it in the post.

Instead of having to drive to Blockbusters or your local movie outlet to return the DVD you can simply leave it to the post man/woman and voila! No wasted petrol or special trip necessary.

Another very attractive advantage is that you don't have to return the DVD's by any specific date. Most movie rental stores allow you only a few days to watch and return the movie but Netflix does not have a send-back date. This is particularly beneficial if you are anything like us- forgetful and prone to not getting
