Scent is a very important part of our lives, yet one which is often taken for granted. The sense of smell is connected with two of the most important parts of our brains; the hippocampus and the limbic system. Studies have shown that at times more than 70% of our emotions may be triggered by what we smell in our environment. Thus, what we smell directly affects our emotions and our memories. The fragrances within our homes have a tremendous amount of power to change the way we feel about our lives. Even a subtle pleasant scent in the home can make us feel warm, happy and comfortable.
Just about every time my husband comes home from work, he calls out, "Something smells good!" A pleasant aroma within the home has far more benefits than a happy husband. It has the power to uplift the spirits of everyone who crosses the threshold.
Many of us define our homes by the way they smell. There's something about the smell of bread baking can give any house or apartment that homey feeling. Delightful scents such as cinnamon, jasmine or lavender can impart a sense of completeness to our homes. Without these pleasant aromas, would any of us feel secure in the knowledge that our house was really a home?
These wonderful scents often bring back memories of what life was like for us as children, growing up. Most of us have experienced the joys of Christmas, with its scents of pine needles, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, peppermint candy, hot chocolate, mulled apple cider, gingerbread cookies and sweet potatoes all comingled in the air. The smell of wood burning in a fireplace can give us a warm feeling of home, even when we're outside in the freezing cold. A mere whiff of the smell of hot coffee can awaken us from a stupor early in the morning, when we're still drowsy from sleep. These scents are such an integral part of our every day lives that they are practically synonymous with our definition of "home."
A home filled with pleasant aromas will seem cleaner and happier to friends and family who come to visit. So if you have a big event planned in your home, it's a good idea to have home fragrance products in every room to help diffuse tension and keep the atmosphere jovial and lighthearted.
