There are certain to be times in business when challenges seem overwhelming. Deadline pressures or clients' needs threaten to crush even the most dedicated of workers. At those times, it's important to be honest with yourself. Where do you need to rededicate your efforts to the job at hand and to help your company succeed? How can you inspire yourself to stay committed to achieving your professional and personal goals? Persistence goes a long way toward helping you attain your objectives, and sustained effort is eventually rewarded. However, you also need to know when to take a break from work. Along with persistence, discipline is equally important. This means you need to take care of yourself. If you're working long hours, forgetting to take a lunch break, and going into the office every weekend, you're setting yourself up for workplace burnout. Discipline is about setting up and sticking with a routine that keeps you physically and mentally healthy so you can perform efficiently in, and out of, the workplace. Control in business begins with control of yourself. Maybe it means getting to the gym for a good workout before or after work, eating healthier, or asking for help on a project that has grown larger than life so you can leave the office at a reasonable time. Don't make the mistake of thinking that without 24-hour access to you, the company will fold. Turn off the cell phone and have some quality time with yourself, your family and your friends. People with a healthy self-image know how to balance persistence and discipline, and know that getting their needs met is an important part of being effective in business.

Motivation and Enthusiasm

Success is the result of small efforts repeated over time. Try not to take on more than you can handle. You'll become overwhelmed easily, which is counterproductive to you and everyone else. At the same time, avoid getting into a rut by instituting new, exciting, and more efficient ways of approaching routine tasks. When you stay motivated, it's easier to work steadily toward your goals. Motivation and enthusiasm go hand in hand. If you're motivated, you're usually enthusiastic, and when you're enthusiastic, you're motivated. The best way to maintain enthusiasm is to believe in yourself and what you're doing.
