on a project, or as simple as refraining from office gossip. Every positive thought produces positive actions that have favourable results not only for you, but also for those around you. The more you practice this line of thinking, the more it becomes second nature. The benefit to your company or organization ultimately benefits you.

Hard Work and Integrity

Many employers rank hard work at the top of their list of qualities of successful people, but you might be surprised to learn that right up there on the list with hard work was a rare quality: integrity. People with integrity evoke respect, loyalty, cooperation and trust from others.

There are no short cuts to success. No doubt, hard work is important. But hard work alone may not always be enough. Because of the complexity and diversity of today's business world, hard work and academic accomplishment are very important, but they can only go so far. Old systems quickly become obsolete and new skills are increasingly necessary. No individual is an expert in all areas. This is why it's important to build a network of co-workers with a variety of skills who are willing to share their expertise with you. The way to do this is to cultivate the respect, loyalty, cooperation, and trust of those with whom you work. This means acting with integrity and checking your ego at the door. Ego is the servant to emotion and drives many of the decisions we make. In business, as in personal life, this can be disastrous. It leads to shortsighted, selfish actions that do little to elevate you or those around you. Levelheaded decision-making and self-control are the hallmarks of integrity and maturity. And integrity and maturity are important factors in acquiring a positive self-image.

How you act becomes how you feel, and how you feel becomes how you act. Learn to control this cycle to your advantage. While you can't always choose what happens around you, you can choose how you think about and react to it. If you bear in mind that every decision you make in this moment affects the outcome of the next, you'll be more likely to choose a reaction that benefits you and your co-workers. There is no better way to make yourself look better than by helping others succeed. This is the advantage of cultivating self-control. It demonstrates respect for others and by respecting others, you garner respect for yourself. They learn to trust and respect you when you are patient, understanding, consistent, and when you take responsibility for your
