I take issue with James Kester's article on whether the War in Iraq is justified.
Mr. Kester begins with a statement that defies argument. As if his opinion is a well known fact. This is a pervasive anti-war propaganda technique. Begin your brain washing with the attitude that brooks no retreat, make it sound as if you are "clearly" right and your opposition is "clearly" wrong.
However, there is room for debate here, and this response will take it up.
Just because you don't agree with a strategy does not make it wrong or impossible to find success. On the contrary, tactics in pursuing your strategy are key in its eventual success as is cooperation from your allies. In the case of Iraq, there is plenty of fault to pass around. Laying it all upon anyone or any group in Washington is sadly naive.
Anyone who believes that the invasion of Iraq is only about the oil is delusional. Anything we do in that region IS about oil, but not in the coarse sense of the concept. A democracy amongst the wolves of dictators and Jihadists following the Salyifiyya teachings that promote Islamic extremism would be one of the greatest accomplishments for the Middle East in its entire modern history. And yes, that would mean, perhaps a better oil situation for the entire world. Or would it? Greed might come into play - democratic nations can succumb to that just as the dictators in the Middle East have. Ever hear of OPEC Mr. Kester?
The problem with this whole discussion is that it assumes that the U.S. government runs around trying to steal things. This hatred of the American government is a crucial part of what is wrong in this country. If this is truly a problem in our government, and I submit it is not, than changing parties every eight years is not going to fix it. And while there may be a money grubber amongst the House or Senate, I dare say that qualification for office only fits the bill for getting campaign funds. This idea that every politician is a man or woman with a hand out is patently wrong.
And the Executive Branch has more important things to think about than an oil well. Even if Iraq was fully online TODAY, it wouldn't effect the price of crude enough to lower the gas prices. The cartel called OPEC sets the price, and Hugo Chavez, that marvelous humanitarian in Venezuela is certainly not going to argue - he likes overpriced oil - after all he some to sell.
The problem, Mr. Kester, is this acerbic belief that America is ugly, America is evil. Government is bad, and the President is the baddest of them all.
I wonder, Mr. Kester, if your choice for President will do better in two years? Perhaps pulling the wool over the eyes of the public by creating a new "Framework for Peace" for Iraq. Another garbage agreement with no teeth in it that the insurgents can ignore while smiling and leading us right along. They will take the aid and discounts from the world while they quietly go about their business of moving Iraq into the mold of Iran. Radical Islamic law for all! And four or eight years down the road, we'll see just how appeasing the Islamic Jihadist works. If you lived over there, do you realize how your wife or daughter would be treated now? And if the insurgents take over? Ask them what female circumcision means. I think that will start an argument for modernizing the concept of Islam all over the Middle East.
