'A college essay' can take various shapes. It depends on the topic you are writing about. Now whenever you want to write 'a good college essay' (or may be the best one) you should according to me keep a few points in mind :

1. Collect the relevant material regarding your topic. If possible from as many sources as possible.

2. Once you have collected enough material arrange it in sequence in which you think it should be.

3. Now start writing with a flow of thoughts in an open and free manner.

4.The introduction and conclusion should be so catching and interesting that the first sentence can take the reader to the end without stopping.

5. Dividing it into appropriate paragraphs can make it more approachable to read.

6. Correct punctuation is very important.

7. Highlighting important points separately will definitely improve the essay.

8. Adding as many charts, tables, maps, pictures, etc. relating to the topic make the essay more interesting.

9. Proofreading and revising your essay is very important.

10. Don't use difficult language unless you are sure of its usage and where it should fit in.

11. Keep the language simple but interesting.

12. Adding some sort of suspense which may lead the reader to guess what's next adds to the 'goodness of college essay'.

13. Sequence of events can take place at any time - maybe centuries back or recent times as long as the thoughts are connected in a proper way.

14. Sudden change may disappoint the readers.

15. Taking the above point in consideration, the thoughts and events should have a proper or some sort of relation or connection which is very important.

16. Absurd turning of events and repetition should be avoided at all costs.

17. The references should be consulted in such a way that the most important points are picked out to be written down.

18. For doing the above a cursory glance should be given to each and every page of references.

19. Essay should be written neatly and in good handwriting.
