Commentary: The New York Times and the McCain lobbyist scandal

by Nancy Lynam

Created on: February 22, 2008

Take it from whence it comes! The New York Times has no business printing anything that hasn't been confirmed as fact. As with all of our newspapers, they are in the business of reporting the news, but that and many other papers have stuck their opinions in where they don't belong. The fact they their newspapers reach so many people, and many people believe that the "written" word is the gospel, is an offense to our nation.

In my lifetime, I have seen where they invent the news. Look at the tabloids and the amount of nonsense they print. Obviously, this backs up what I said about putting things in "print". They should be ashamed of themselves. Our forefathers would cringe at the idea of how things have evolved since we became a nation. Little by little, newspapers are often taking sides in political campaigns when it is the last thing they should be doing. They have a tremendous impact on the outcomes of political campaigns. In my opinion, they take advantage of those who do believe whatever is put into print. I believe their function is to report news...based on facts without prejudice or bias toward either side of an issue. Yes, this seems to be idealistic thinking in today's world, but it is none the less how it should be.

Whether or not Senator McCain had an "involvement" years ago, is pretty much irrelevant today. After all, Bill Clinton carried on in a less than "presidential" manner and he remained president. I don't think that the New York Times or any other paper has the right to sit in judgment. Has anyone seen the emails with pictures of B. Obama, H. Clinton and a governor from out west standing for the Pledge of Allegiance? The governor and H. Clinton have their hands over their hearts. B. Obama has his hands clasped in his crotch. While email seems to be more telling of actual happenings, this probably has never been shown in a newspaper. I take the news with a grain of salt. I decide for myself what I perceive to be the truth. I have my own values and hope that my fellow Americans are feeling the same way. On a final note, the New York Times and all newspapers should rethink why they exist. If they want to become political, then get out of the newspaper business. Other than that, just give us the facts.
