Album reviews: Wish You Were Here, by Pink Floyd

The first week of 1975 began the conception of my absolute personal favorite album from Pink Floyd that is to be none other than "Wish you were here". The follow up effort after the raging success of "Dark side of the moon" that began the rift between Roger Waters and David Gilmour on issues of conceptual ideas and others(more than likely ego clash). Including two themes in one progressive album, the band attacks the record industry and as for the other, a tribute for the tragic demise of Syd Barret's sanity.

Produced by the band themselves with the engineering expertise of Brian Humphries, the initial sketch work of three songs(which the band had been playing live during the European tour from the previous year), two of which to be used later(on future albums)and the remaining tune became the center piece "Shine on you crazy diamond" would be the main progressive epic tribute for the former chief songwriter/guitarist of the band along with the title cut of this brilliant 5 track album.

Though the emotional and physical drain from enormous success from "Dark side of the moon", the band goes back to work in full force despite the exhaustions. Six months of tense production in the Abbey road studios and a label switch occurrence for the benefit of ownership of their recordings from that point in time accomplished the final print and release of the album on 15th of September,1975.

Packaged originally with an almost anonymous sleeve cover of black with a center graphic circular artwork of two robotic holding hands(in agreement)with the four elements quarterly divided as the background. The inner sleeve reveals the common/popular cover of the faceless businessman shaking hands with his flaming counterpart in a lane of a movie studio lot with other subliminal imageries representing the four elements.

The album starts off with the first 5 progressive parts of "Shine on you crazy diamond"(I-V), as part I initiated with the same synth pad(EMS VCS 3)used from the last album swells in both low and high octaves simultaneously along with various melodic warm ups and electronic noise samples from a minimoog to give way to(in my opinion)one of David Gilmour's appropriately tasty guitar solos to progress into a modulation of minor chords. With Roger Waters on the main vocals, the haunting, intense momentum of these initial 5 part tribute obviously warps full speed ahead for the band's idealistic savvy with stereophonic methodologies and sincerity to pay respect for their
